David Morales won the Democratic primary for mayor in Providence, Rhode Island, on Wednesday night, unseating the incumbent mayor, Brett Smiley. The 27-year-old democratic socialist and Rhode Island State Representative won with approximately 54% of the vote, bringing in more than 14,000 votes to Smiley's 12,600. This victory marks the first time a candidate has beaten a sitting Providence mayor in a primary election. Morales campaigned on a progressive platform, focusing on housing affordability and rent stabilization. He pledged to cap annual rent increases at 4% and raise taxes on corporate polluters and landlords. In contrast, the incumbent Smiley had previously vetoed a rent-stabilization ordinance. Morales will face Republican nominee David Talan in the November general election. If he wins, he will become the youngest mayor in the history of Providence. During his victory speech, Morales stated that his campaign met the needs of working people and pledged to govern in coalition with his neighbors.
