Ayham Babidi was fatally shot by a Des Plaines police officer during a domestic disturbance investigation.

Des Plaines police officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a home on East Touhy Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. During the incident, 21-year-old Ayham Babidi was reported to be acting violently and breaking windows. Police stated that Babidi approached an officer while brandishing an electric hedge trimmer in a threatening manner. Although the officer gave verbal commands for Babidi to drop the trimmer, Babidi refused and continued to advance aggressively. The officer fired three rounds at Babidi to stop his advance. Following the shooting, the officer provided medical aid until additional responders arrived. Babidi later died at a hospital. Jamal Babidi, the father of the deceased, stated that his son had bipolar disorder and did not own a gun. He noted that the police had been called many times in the past to help transport his son to the hospital rather than to arrest or kill him. The Major Crimes Assistance Team is conducting an independent review of the shooting. Police have secured security camera footage from nearby homes to assist with the investigation.
