A Florida grand jury report has identified a "sophisticated scheme" in which the administration of Ron DeSantis misappropriated $10 million in taxpayer money from a Medicaid settlement to fund political activities. The funds were initially routed to the Hope Florida Foundation, a nonprofit linked to First Lady Casey DeSantis, before being funneled into political action committees and the Republican Party of Florida. While the grand jury found the transfer violated state law, it declined to issue criminal charges because no official took responsibility for the decision. The administration defended the move, with Ron DeSantis stating the settlement was legally sound and that the only crime was the leak of the report. Attorney General James Uthmeier, who was chief of staff during the transfer, dismissed the report as a "hoax" and noted that his own political action committee was a primary recipient of the funds. Democrats have seized on the report to argue for accountability. Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly called the incident "money laundering" and pledged to reopen the investigation if elected. Meanwhile, Republican Senator Rick Scott and State Senator Don Gaetz expressed concern over the misuse of funds, urging for accountability and legislative changes to prevent future occurrences.
