New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's pied-à-terre tax will continue its planned rollout despite a legal challenge. An appellate judge ruled on Thursday that the tax on second homes above a certain value will proceed while the city faces a legal dispute. This ruling follows a temporary restraining order issued by Staten Island Judge Wayne Ozzi, which briefly halted the levy. The lawsuit, filed by three city residents, challenges the legality of the city's distribution of homeowner information and the mailing of notices to 17,000 people, rather than the policy itself. While the tax has become a hallmark policy for Mamdani, it has drawn criticism from conservatives and the wealthy. President Trump, a Queens native who moved to Florida in thes 2019, expressed his disapproval of the surcharge, stating it must be stopped immediately. Attorney General Todd Blanche has not yet confirmed if the Department of Justice will take legal action against the tax.
