Former Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna Faces Preventive Detention for Alleged Involvement in Mexico's 'Huachicol Fiscal' Fuel Smuggling Scheme

A federal judge has ordered the official preventive detention of former Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna, who is accused of involvement in a complex criminal network dedicated to smuggling and concealing illicit fuel. The General Prosecutor's Office obtained the ruling during a private hearing held via video conference, confirming the detention of the former naval officer as legal. Fernando Farías Laguna was detained in Argentina in April following an Interpol Red Notice and was recently transferred back to Mexico to face the judicial authority. The prosecution alleges that he and his brother used their positions within the Ministry of the Navy to influence customs controls and facilitate the illegal entry of oil into the country. By using fake documentation, the network introduced oil as other products to avoid paying taxes. The defense requested an extension of the constitutional term to determine if there are sufficient elements to link him to the process. He will remain in the maximum-security El Altiplano prison until the next hearing on August 26.
