Omar Garcia Harfuch receives praise from DEA head Terry Cole during international drug control conference in Buenos Aires
Mexican Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch received significant accolades from DEA Director Terry Cole during the 40th International Conference for Drug Control in Buenos Aires. Cole described Harfuch as a "trusted partner" and a "good friend of the United States," highlighting his leadership in combating transnational criminal organizations and his lethal drugs. Despite recent tensions between the two nations, the administration announced a commitment to security cooperation. The administration noted that Mexico has delivered approximately 100 suspects to the U.S. since the start of the second term of President Trump in January 2025. Ambassador Ronald Johnson confirmed that both countries signed a declaration of intent for Mexico to purchase American drones and anti-drone systems to fight narcotics groups. While the administration has occasionally used a confrontational tone toward Mexico, Harfuch’s presence at the conference demonstrated a continued commitment to bilateral security. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum noted that the cooperation must be based on respect for Mexico's sovereignty.
