The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development dispersed 40.4 million sterile flies across 14 municipalities in Chihuahua between July 26 and August 21 to combat the cattle parasite worm. The strategy involves releasing sterile insects to mate with wild specimens, which reduces the reproduction of the fly that transmits the parasite. Of the total, 38.7 million flies were produced at the Metapa de Domínguez plant in Chiapas and released in various municipalities, including Coronado and Chihuahua City. An additional 1.7 million flies from the Pacora plant in Panama arrived by air in Ciudad Juárez and were released in the Samalayuca area. The National Service for Food Safety, Sanitation and Quality (Senasica) continues to install new dispersal units in the Juárez Valley. These actions are part of a coordinated effort to protect national livestock health and ensure that the 250,000 head of cattle prepared for export to the United States are free of the parasite before the border opens on August 24.
