A woman suffered life-threatening injuries after being mauled by an off-leash pit bull in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood.

A woman suffered life-threatening injuries after being attacked by an off-leash pit bull on Larkin Street in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood on Tuesday morning. Police responded to the scene at approximately 9:20 a.m. and found the woman with severe injuries to her neck, chest, and hands. Bystanders and residents attempted to intervene during the attack, which lasted between 10 and 15 minutes. Police officers used a catchpole to restrain the dog and separate it from the victim, providing medical aid until paramedics arrived. The woman was transported to a hospital where she remains in serious condition. During the restraint process, the pit bull became unresponsive and died at the scene. San Francisco Animal Care & Control took custody of the remains. Police are currently investigating the incident and searching for the dog's owner, who was not located at the scene. The attack occurred in an area with a high concentration of homeless individuals with dogs. District 2 Supervisor Stephen Sherrill noted that the city's dog court has resumed taking on a backlog of vicious dog cases to address irresponsible ownership.
