The Department of Justice expands beef affordability investigation to include eight major grocery retailers

The Department of Justice has expanded its investigation into beef affordability to include eight of the nation's largest grocery retailers. Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. sent letters to Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize, Costco, and Amazon regarding recent increases in retail beef prices. The administration announced that beef prices are a critical concern to Americans and a priority for the Justice Department. This expansion follows a federal antitrust probe launched in May into the four largest meatpackers, which control more than 85% of the U.S. beef processing market. Federal officials are reviewing more than 3 million documents to determine if industry concentration has contributed to high prices. To address rising costs, President Trump signed a proclamation in August to increase the amount of lean beef trimmings that can be imported at lower tariff rates. The administration announced that these imports will be distributed in three tranches for the remainder of 2026. President Trump also indicated he would authorize legal documents to give farmers and ranchers the right to process their own food to challenge the meatpacking industry's dominance.
