President Trump Imposes New Tariffs on Foreign Drones and Components to Strengthen Domestic Supply Chains

The administration announced new tariffs on foreign drones and drone components that officially took effect on Thursday. These duties are designed to reduce the United States' reliance on imports, particularly from China, which currently dominates the market. Drones with a takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms, as well as those with thermal imaging capabilities and docking stations, face a 100% tariff. Smaller drones are subject to a 25% duty. President Trump signed the order setting out these duties in August, citing the national security threat posed by dependence on Chinese-made drones. The administration aims to boost domestic supply chains and protect critical infrastructure from potential disruption and espionage. China expressed opposition to the move, with a commerce ministry spokesman stating that the tariffs would disrupt the global supply chain and undermine a fair market environment. Shares of U.S. drone makers and component providers, such as Unusual Machines, Swarmer, and Ondas, saw gains on Thursday. AeroVironment also advanced, supported by a $465 million Army contract.
