Mary Sorenson is among dozens of Americans missing after catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border

A massive glacier collapse and mudslide in the Himalayan Mountains caused a catastrophic flood along the Nepal-Tibet border, leaving thousands of people missing. The disaster struck the northern Rasuwa district of Nepal, triggered by a landslide about 12 miles northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border post. At least 955 people have died and more than 4,400 remain missing, according to Nepali and Chinese officials. The floodwaters swept away buildings, hotels, and roads, with some areas showing total destruction. Dozens of Americans are among the missing, including 60-year-old Mary Sorenson. Sorenson was on a spiritual pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar when she was last seen at an immigration facility in Gyirong on the Tibet side of the border. Her son, Riley Wildeman, stated that she had completed her pilgrimage and was beginning her journey home to Atlanta when the flood occurred. Rescue teams continue to search through the debris, while families of the missing have traveled to the region to wait for news.
