Olaf Sleijpen confirms De Nederlandsche Bank has relocated gold reserves from North America to London to improve crisis preparedness
De Nederlandsche Bank, the central bank of the Netherlands, has relocated 86 metric tons of gold from its holdings in New York and Ottawa to London. The administration announced that the move, completed between March and August, was intended to strengthen the bank's resilience and preparedness for severe crises amid increasing geopolitical unrest. Olaf Sleijpen, the governor of De Nederlandsche Bank, stated that the relocation improved the tradability of the gold reserves. The bank noted that gold held in London meets modern international trade standards and is more readily available for use in a crisis than the gold held in New York and Ottawa. While some gold was physically transported across the Atlantic, much of the relocation was achieved by selling gold in New York and purchasing replacement gold in London. The bank currently holds a total of 612.4 metric tons of gold, valued at approximately $83.6 billion at the end of 2025. This move follows similar shifts by France and Germany, which have also moved gold reserves out of the United States.
