Alex Zhavoronkov reports that AI-discovered drug rentosertib may reduce biological age in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Alex Zhavoronkov, founder and co-CEO of Insilico Medicine, reported that the experimental drug rentosertib may slow the biological aging process while treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The drug, which was discovered using artificial intelligence, was tested in a small clinical study involving 42 patients with IPF over a 12-week period. Researchers used six different proteomic aging clocks to measure biological age based on blood proteins. The study found that patients who received rentosertib appeared an average of three to four years younger than those who received a placebo. The results were most consistent in the 30 mg twice-daily regimen, which showed a significant reduction in biological age across all six clocks. The findings suggest that the drug's anti-aging effects may operate independently of its primary goal of treating lung scarring. While the 60 mg once-daily dose produced the greatest improvement in lung function, the 30 mg twice-daily dose produced the strongest age-reversal signal. The drug is currently in a year-long phase 3 study involving more than 300 patients in China.
