Alejandro Eder initiates demolition of first of 11 priority buildings in Cali following earthquake

Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder oversaw the demolition of the Mária Mercedes Lloreda building, the first of 11 priority structures identified for demolition following the earthquake on August 10. The building, located in the Cuarto de Legua neighborhood, was declared uninhabitable due to severe structural damage. To mitigate risk and protect residents, the administration is managing a reconstruction process estimated to cost $10 billion over four years. The administration announced a $9.2 million fund to support affected micro-enterprises and is distributing 20 tons of humanitarian aid daily. Currently, 45,000 families are affected, with 11,000 families already receiving a $1.05 million monthly economic subsidy for three months. The administration is also prioritizing the recovery of the public school network, where 260 of 338 institutions were affected. For the elderly population, the administration is evaluating the use of confiscated assets from organized crime to provide housing solutions. The demolition of the Mária Mercedes Lloreda building was significant for residents, including Esther Lucía García, whose mother was the only victim of the earthquake in that specific building.
