President Abelardo de la Espriella Orders Comprehensive Review of National Speed Cameras and Traffic Infraction Systems

The administration announced an integral review of the operation of automatic and semi-automatic systems for detecting traffic infractions, commonly known as speed cameras. This initiative was launched following instructions from President Abelardo de la Espriella, who requested a formal evaluation of the legality and functioning of these devices across the country. The Ministry of Transportation will lead the process in coordination with the National Traffic Safety Agency and the Superintendency of Transportation. Senator Gustavo Moreno has expressed concerns regarding the current system, describing it as a "round and nefarious business" where many cameras operate without proper certification or calibration. He noted that of the 751 cameras currently installed, approximately 400 are operating irregularly. Moreno highlighted that 52% of the revenue from fines goes to private operators, while 34% goes to the Secretariat of Traffic. While the Federation of Municipalities of Colombia supported the review, executive director Gilberto Toro acknowledged the need for cameras to improve safety in a country where thousands of people die annually due to a lack of sufficient traffic agents.
