The National Electoral Institute (INE) has allocated a budget of approximately 10.8 billion pesos for political parties and independent candidate campaigns for the 2027 federal election. This public funding will cover ordinary activities, campaigns, and obligations for political actors, including consolidated parties and new forces like Paz and Somos Mexico. To provide context for the scale of these resources, the INE compared the budget to everyday costs. The amount could purchase approximately 21.9 million lists of sixth-grade primary school supplies or provide 282,000 annual payments for the Pension for the Well-being of Older Adults program. While the budget is determined by a legal formula, experts suggest that a deep reform of the General Law of Electoral Institutions and Procedures is necessary to improve the monitoring of these resources. Critics note that the INE currently lacks sufficient juridical tools to effectively fiscalize private financing, which currently accounts for less than 10% of judicial matters. A lack of political will from parties in Congress to reform fiscalization remains a primary concern for the 2027 cycle.
