Mexican students fall below OECD average in PISA 2025 results, showing significant learning gaps in mathematics and science
Mexican students demonstrated a performance below the OECD average in mathematics, science, and reading during the PISA 2025 evaluation. Mexico scored 388 points in mathematics, falling 75 points short of the OECD average of 463. In science, Mexico reached 414 points against the OECD average of 482, while reading scores were 408 compared to the OECD average of 461. Only 30% of Mexican students reached the basic level of competence in mathematics, compared to 65% in the OECD average. Furthermore, 41.8% of students were below the basic level in all three subjects, which is more than double the OECD average of 19.7%. Only 0.5% of students achieved excellence levels in any of the three areas. Andreas Schleicher, director of Education and Competencies for the OECD, noted that Mexico maintained its general results while incorporating more disadvantaged students into the educational system. However, Schleicher noted that the challenge now is to significantly elevate the quality of teachers. The report also highlighted that 40% of students were below the basic level in science, reading, and mathematics, indicating a learning crisis in Mexico.
