Italian politician and activist Emma Bonino dies at age 78

Emma Bonino, a prominent Italian politician and human rights activist, has died at the age of 78. She was a well-known leader of the Radical Party, which she helped lead in campaigns to legalize abortion and divorce in Italy. Bonino first entered politics after having an illegal abortion at age 26, an experience that inspired her to launch civil-disobedience demonstrations. Her political career spanned over 50 years, during with she served as a foreign minister, trade minister, and EU affairs minister in various Italian governments. She also served as a European commissioner for humanitarian aid and consumer protection. Throughout her career, she was known for her sharp wit and humanitarian focus. She maintained a deep friendship with Pope Francis, despite their differing views on ethical issues. Bonino was a strong advocate for European federalism and international human rights. She is survived by her siblings, Domenica and Giovanni, and their children.
