Larry Rubin Criticizes President Claudia Sheinbaum's Proposal to Limit Political Offices to Citizens with Single Nationality

Larry Rubin, the president of the American Society of Mexico, described President Claudia Sheinbaum's constitutional reform proposal as a grave error. The proposal seeks to modify articles 86, 116, and 122 of the Mexican Constitution to ensure that those seeking to run for president, governor, or the head of government of Mexico City must possess only Mexican nationality. If a candidate has dual nationality, they must formally renounce their second nationality before registration. Once in office, they cannot acquire a new nationality. Rubin argued that having more than one passport does not imply a lack of loyalty to Mexico. He noted that approximately 20 million Mexicans have dual nationality, and about 40 million Mexicans live in the United States. Rubin stated that a citizen's loyalty should be evaluated based on their conduct rather than their nationality. He called on legislators from all parties to review the proposal to avoid punishing the 60 million Mexicans who have dual nationality around the world and in Mexico.
