President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo presents constitutional reform to require single nationality for Mexico's top executive positions.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo formally presented a constitutional reform proposal to the Chamber of Deputies to ensure that candidates for president and governor hold only Mexican nationality. The reform aims to eliminate potential conflicts of interest and foreign influence by requiring that those seeking the highest executive offices at both federal and national and state levels must renounce any other nationality before registration. Currently, the Constitution allows for dual nationality, which can lead to interpretative confusion. The administration announced that the reform will modify Articles 86, 116, and 122 of the Constitution, as well as the Law of Nationality. This change ensures that the national interest remains the supreme priority for leaders, preventing a leader with dual citizenship from being influenced by a foreign nation. The proposal was prompted in part by the case of former governor Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca, who holds both Mexican and American citizenship while seeking a 2030 presidential bid. The reform was officially handed over to the Chamber of Deputies for analysis and and opinion.
