Empresas Públicas de Medellín Announces Water Rationing for Six Municipalities Starting August 31

Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) will begin a water rationing program starting Monday, August 31, 2026, to address a significant decrease in water availability caused by a severe drought and the El Niño phenomenon. The rationing will primarily affect the Piedras Blancas system, which has the lowest storage capacity in the region and currently faces a deficit of approximately 120 liters per second. This measure will impact 109,235 installations across six municipalities, including the neighborhoods of Villa Hermosa, Popular, Manrique, Candelaria, Buenos Aires, and Aranjuez. The scheduled interruptions will occur nightly between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. the following day, alternating daily throughout September. To support the affected areas, EPM will deploy water trucks to provide supply during the rationing periods. Santiago Wilches, the Subgerent of Acqueduct and Sewerage, stated that the company will monitor the system's behavior for a month to determine if the measures need to be adjusted or extended based on the recovery of water sources in the coming months.
