Raúul Lozano Caballero, the Secretary of Environment for Nuevo León, has identified the Cadereyta refinery as the primary source of the atypical odors affecting the Monterrey Metropolitan Zone. Following reports of strong smells, such as gas and sulfur, beginning on August 25, residents in municipalities including Monterrey, García, and Juárez have reported significant air pollution. Technical analysis and meteorological studies conducted by the Environment Secretariat have confirmed that the plume of pollutants originates from the refining processes of hydrocarbons at the federal facility. Raúul Lozano Caballero will travel to Mexico City to present a formal request to federal authorities, including Petróleos Mexicanos and the Federal Government, for immediate national intervention. The state government is currently conducting nocturnal routes and inspections to monitor the situation and while no risks have been ruled out, the administration is collecting technical data to develop a plan of action to resolve the emissions problem.
