The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking signed a €387.8 million contract with Bull to deliver the LUMI-AI supercomputer in Finland.
The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has secured a €387.8 million procurement contract with the French vendor Bull to deliver LUMI-AI, a next-generation supercomputer. The system will be hosted in Kajaani, Finland, and is scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2027. The contract covers the acquisition, delivery, installation, and maintenance of the system, with funding shared equally between the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and a six-country consortium including Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland. LUMI-AI is expected to provide ten times the AI capacity of the current LUMI supercomputer. It will be powered by AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and 6th Gen AMD EPYC 256-core processors. The project also includes a quantum computer, LUMI-IQ, which will be integrated with the supercomputer to form a hybrid platform. The system will be powered by renewable energy and utilize liquid-cooling technology to capture excess heat for district heating. The project represents a significant milestone in Europe's sovereign-AI infrastructure, providing high-performance computing resources for startups, SMEs, and the wider research community.
