Ursula von der Leyen Announces 200-Million-Euro Investment Package to Strengthen EU-Greenland Ties
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a 200-million-euro investment package for Greenland to deepen economic and strategic ties with the European Union. The funding, to be invested over the next two years, focuses on three key areas: digital connectivity, clean energy, and critical raw materials. This announcement follows a period of increased pressure from President Trump, who has repeatedly advocated for U.S. control of the island. In response to these sovereignty concerns, von der Leyen emphasized that Greenland's future remains a decision for the people of Greenland and Denmark. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed gratitude for the European support. Frederiksen noted that Denmark is open to working closely with both the U.S. and European allies on Arctic security. The investment package aims to bolster the EU's presence in the Arctic, where Greenland holds 25 of the 34 minerals the bloc considers crucial for renewable energy and technology.
