Ronald D. Johnson highlights joint US-Mexico strategy to dismantle cartel networks by targeting financial resources

United States Ambassador to Mexico Ronald D. Johnson stated that the US and Mexico are pursuing a joint strategy to hit criminal networks at their heart by following the money. During the International Forum on Financial Crimes CI-FIRST, Johnson explained that while drugs and arms can be replaced, seizing illicit financial resources directly limits the ability of cartels and terrorist organizations to recruit members, acquire weapons, and rebuild their networks. This cooperation, spurred by President Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, involves real-time information exchange, OFAC sanctions, and collaboration with Mexican financial authorities. Johnson emphasized that fighting corruption is essential to this strategy, as it drives away investment and generates insecurity. Omar Reyes, head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), noted that Mexico has hardened its anti-cartel strategy to affect the economic structures of criminal groups. Between 2024 and 2026, the UIF immobilized 24,622 accounts and approximately $8.67 billion. Reyes stated that each asset freeze is accompanied by a complaint to the General Prosecutor’s Office to advance judicial processes.
