Scott Metzger reports that China is on track to fulfill its 25 million metric ton soybean purchase commitment to the United States.

Scott Metzger, president of the American Soybean Association, stated that China is currently on track to meet its 25 million metric ton annual soybean purchase commitment to the United States. According to customs data, China imported 12.14 million metric tons of soybeans in August, which was a 5.7% increase from July. For the period of January to August, China's soybean imports totaled 74.11 million tons, a 1.1% increase over the previous year. Metzger noted that China has already purchased 14 million metric tons toward its 25 million ton agreement. While China remains a primary buyer, Metzger indicated that the industry is not solely dependent on the market. Mexico remains the second-largest buyer of U.S. soybeans, and exports to other international markets increased last year. The administration announced that China is ramping up its purchases, with flash reports showing a rise in soybean exports to China exceeding 700,000 metric tonnes in the first nine days of September. Traders are currently looking for tariff relief to widen sourcing options as the South American marketing season nears its end.
