Zohran Mamdani will attend New York City's annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Friday. The mayor confirmed his attendance despite criticism from Rudy Giuliani, who stated he would be offended by Mamdani's presence at the event. Giuliani, who served as mayor during the 2001 attacks, argued that Mamdani should skip the ceremony because of his appointment of Ramzi Kassem as chief legal counsel. Kassem previously represented a convict from al Qaeda, the group responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Relatives of 9/11 victims have launched a petition with nearly 100,000 signatures urging Mamdani to stay away. Former Governor George Pataki also expressed opposition to Mamdani's attendance. Mamdani defended his commitment to the ceremony, stating he wants to focus on the families of those who died and the first responders. He recently signed executive orders establishing 9/11 as an official citywide day of remembrance and modernizing emergency preparedness. While President Trump will not attend the New York ceremony, Vice President JD Vance is expected to represent the administration.
