NATO Allies Foiled Russian Submarine Operation to Sabotage Undersea Cables

A joint operation between the United States, United Kingdom, and Norway successfully tracked and diverted three Russian submarines during a covert operation in the Arctic waters near the Svalbard archipelago. The Russian undersea warfare directorate, known as GUGI, utilized a secret weapon to simulate the deployment of sabotage against vital undersea fiber-optic cables and pipelines. While the technology remains undisclosed, the operation allowed NATO allies to demonstrate that they could detect and deter Russian covert activities in the High North. Norway's Defence Minister Tore Sandvik stated that the joint operation sent a clear message to Russia that they cannot operate covertly. He noted that any attempt to target critical infrastructure will be met with consequences. The operation followed a period of increased Russian activity mapping undersea elements since 2023. In a separate development, Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin via telephone on Tuesday. During the conversation, Putin told Donald Trump that Moscow does not intend to attack Europe. Donald Trump said that Putin is looking to make a deal to end the war in Ukraine, and that if Volodymyr Zelenskyy is willing to be a part of that deal, it would be beneficial for both parties.
