The U.S. Army will disband a specialized strike drone battalion in Europe to return the unit to its primary role as an airborne infantry battalion. General Christopher LaNeve, acting chief of staff of the U.S. Army, initiated the move as part of a broader "back-to-basics" strategy. The unit, which was established in January 2026 to study lessons from the war in Ukraine, will complete large-scale exercises in Germany in August and September before presenting its findings. While some defense experts argue that disbanding a dedicated drone unit could slow the development of unmanned warfare capabilities, the Army maintains it is accelerating drone dominance. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has pledged $1.1 billion to expand drone capabilities across the armed forces.
