Elbridge Colby Initiates Six-Month Review of U.S. Military Forces in Europe to Shift Focus Toward Asia

Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby has launched a six-month review of U.S. military forces in Europe to determine which units to retain or cut. The review, dubbed "NATO 3.0," aims to move the continent toward taking primary responsibility for its own conventional defense. Elbridge Colby intends to achieve this by shifting the U.S. military focus toward Asia to better confront the rising threat of China. The administration announced that the United States currently maintains approximately 80,000 military personnel in Europe. However, competing priorities and political considerations may limit the scope of major drawdowns. While some officials push for significant reductions, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated a desire to maintain a stronger U.S. presence. Furthermore, Congress has established a floor of 76,000 personnel to ensure that any reductions are made after consulting with allies. The final options for the review will be presented to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth by November 6.
