Omar Bula Escobar assures citizens that passport issuance will continue despite judicial suspension of new model contracts
The administration announced that the issuance of passports will continue without interruption despite the provisional suspension of two contracts related to the new passport model by the Administrative Tribunal of Cundinamarca. Minister of Foreign Affairs Omar Bula Escobar stated that there is no reason for citizens to rush to offices or consulates, as the country currently holds an inventory of 600,000 passports. Of these, 410,000 are immediately available, while 190,000 are scheduled to arrive on September 10th. Minister of Interior Rodrigo Lara Restrepo, who also serves as the Acting Director of the National Printing Office, noted that technical and legal teams are reviewing the judicial decision to determine the necessary actions. The suspension affects Interadministrative Specific Agreement 001 of 2025 and CI-005 of 2026, which were intended to enable the new passport model. Senate President Honorio Henr铆quez submitted a request for information to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the progress of the new passport process, the investment involved, and the difficulties cited by the judge in the judicial decision.
