Stanford University researchers discover that older adults face significant health risks from extreme heat at much lower temperatures than previously estimated
A new study led by health academics from Stanford University reveals that people aged 60 and older are at a much higher risk of illness or death from extreme heat than previously thought. Researchers found that older adults reach a point of "uncompensable heat stress" much sooner than younger people because their bodies lose the natural ability to cool themselves as they age. While previous assessments often assumed everyone could tolerate heat as well as a healthy young adult, this study shows that older adults face harmful heat stress at just 1.5C of global warming above preindustrial levels, whereas younger adults would require 4C of warming to reach similar limits. As the global population ages, with the number of people over 60 projected to double by 2050, the risk becomes more significant. The study highlights that each additional degree of global warming will expose roughly one billion more people to uncompensable heat annually, with the burden falling disproportionately on the elderly. Experts suggest that targeted, age-specific action plans and improved cooling infrastructure are necessary to protect vulnerable older populations.
