Alanah Melton Announces Cooling Stations to Combat Extreme Heat in Birmingham

The City of Birmingham is partnering with community organizations, libraries, and recreation centers to provide cooling stations for residents facing a prolonged heat wave. Alanah Melton, director of unhoused strategies for the City of Birmingham, stated that these stations will be activated whenever temperatures or the heat index reach 95 degrees or higher to help residents stay hydrated and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. The city is currently experiencing an extreme heat warning for central Alabama, with the heat index expected to climb as high as 113 degrees in some areas. While the heat wave is expected to continue through the week, the National Weather Service in Birmingham issued the first-ever extreme heat warning for the region in 2025. Residents are encouraged to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments to avoid heat stress, especially as overnight temperatures remain high. More moderate temperatures are expected to arrive by Friday, with highs in the lower 90s.
