Sara Lidia Mendiola Landeros, a prominent human rights lawyer and executive director of the Center for Research and Training Proposal Civic, died in Mexico City on Saturday at the age of 41. The organization announced her death with deep sorrow, noting her persistence in defending the dignity of journalists and human rights defenders. Since taking the leadership role in 2017, Mendiola Landeros served as a key legal representative for victims of press attacks. She notably accompanied the families of murdered journalists, including Miroslava Breach and Regina Mart铆nez, seeking to ensure that legal processes resulted in integral justice. She frequently argued that a sentence against a perpetrator did not equate to full justice if the primary authors of a crime remained unpunished. Mendiola Landeros held degrees in Law, Human Rights, and Penal Acusatory Law from various Mexican institutions. Before leading Propuesta Civic, she worked in law firms and served on the State Human Rights Commission of San Luis Potos铆. Her death has been recognized by international bodies, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mexico, which praised her commitment to protecting freedom of expression.
