U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree highlights lack of final removal order for roommate of killed illegal immigrant Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree revealed during a field hearing that the roommate of Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero was the actual target of the immigration enforcement operation that resulted in his death. While Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) originally stated the shooting occurred while agents were surveilling a person under a final removal order, Pingree noted that neither Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero nor his roommate possessed a final removal order. Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian national, was allegedly killed by an ICE officer while driving his roommate's car. The family of Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, represented by attorney Ben Gideon, argued that there was no lawful justification for stopping the vehicle. The administration announced that the shooting occurred because agents feared for public safety. Democratic members of Congress hosted the hearing in Biddeford, Maine, to demand answers from the administration. Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey stated that his office is conducting a thorough investigation into the use of deadly force, though federal jurisdiction over Department of Homeland Security practices remains with the administration.
