Sudbury resident Mason Sundberg died after a falling tree struck him at a YMCA camp in Wayland.

Sudbury resident Mason Sundberg, an 8-year-old boy, was killed after a falling tree struck him at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. when a large tree fell in a domino effect, knocking down another tree and striking Mason Sundberg with branches. He was transported by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An adult camp counselor suffered minor injuries and was subsequently released from a local hospital. West Suburban YMCA President and CEO Jack Fucci announced that the camp will remain closed for the rest of the week to provide grief counseling and support resources for campers, families, and staff. Wayland police and fire officials expressed their condolences to the family, noting that the accident was a result of unexpected natural events. The Sundberg family described Mason Sundberg as a joyful child who loved video games, swimming, and drawing. Sudbury Public Schools are currently working with the STARS team to provide crisis management and support for the community.
