Jennifer Homendy Updates Public on Fatal Cargo Plane Crash at Miami International Airport

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy provided an update on the investigation into a cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport. A Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air for Amazon, overshot the runway and struck two vehicles, resulting in five deaths. The victims, identified by Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, were traveling in a cleaning crew van and a Toyota SUV. Three people remain hospitalized, including two in critical condition. The two pilots, Jaime Felipe Silva Molina and Joseph Carol, were treated for minor injuries and released. The crash site remains partially closed to accommodate the investigation and fuel remediation. Homendy noted that the plane traveled 1,300 feet past the paved surface, crossing a fence and coming to a stop near a fleet of parked Tesla robotaxis. The investigation is currently examining whether installing an Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) at the end of the runway could have mitigated the impact. While Miami International Airport currently lacks this safety feature, the system has been successfully used at over 70 airports to decelerate aircraft that overrun the runway.
