Garland Police Shoot and Kill Michael Antonio Santacruz After He Advanced Toward Officers With a Machete

Garland police officers shot and killed 37-year-old Michael Antonio Santacruz early Monday morning after he advanced toward them while wielding a machete. Officers first received a 911 call at 2:15 a.m. regarding a man with a machete at a gas station, but they were unable to locate him initially. At approximately 3:20 a.m., officers found Michael Antonio Santacruz at a bus stop near the intersection of Broadway Boulevard and Colonel Drive. Police spent 15 to 25 minutes attempting to negotiate with the man and instructed him to drop his weapon. When he refused and began to advance toward the officers, the department deployed an electrical control device, which failed to subdue him. As he continued to swing the machete toward the officers, multiple officers discharged their firearms. No officers were injured during the incident. Paramedics transported Michael Antonio Santacruz to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the Garland Police Department and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Public Integrity Unit conduct independent investigations.
