Luis Manuel Aviles Released from Immigration Detention While Son Serves on USS Abraham Lincoln

Luis Manuel Aviles was released from federal immigration custody after being detained by Border Patrol in Key West, Florida. The 48-year-old handyman from Nicaragua, who has lived in the U.S. for nearly 20 years, was arrested during a traffic stop while his son, Joshua Aviles, was deployed on the USS Abraham Lincoln. Joshua Aviles is currently serving a record-breaking nine-month deployment in the Middle East. The arrest of Luis Manuel Aviles sparked public discussion regarding the administration's aggressive immigration crackdown, which has seen the detention of several family members of active-duty troops. The Department of Homeland Security noted that having a military relative does not automatically grant immunity from immigration laws. Despite having a work permit and a pending asylum case, Luis Manuel Aviles was briefly held in ICE custody. His son, Joshua Aviles, expressed the emotional difficulty of working 12-hour shifts at sea while his father was detained. The Navy confirmed the vessel is now en route to the West Coast.
