Jessica Bowie Charged with Plotting ISIS-Inspired Terror Attack on New York State Capitol

Jessica Bowie was arrested Wednesday and charged Thursday with attempting to provide material support to the terrorist organization ISIS. Federal officials stated that Bowie, a 35-year-old resident of Albany, allegedly plotted to use an explosive device to attack the New York State Capitol building. According to a criminal complaint, Bowie converted to Islam five years ago and was radicalized online, where she pledged allegiance to the ISIS group. She allegedly communicated with FBI informants posing as ISIS facilitators, telling them she wanted to destroy the building and kill the senators during a meeting. Bowie visited the Capitol five times between July and August to conduct surveillance, and she allegedly purchased bomb-making materials from a local hardware store. The FBI Albany Joint Terrorism Task Force led the investigation, which began over a month ago. New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed gratitude to law enforcement for foiling the plot. Bowie faces a statutory maximum prison term of 20 years and a fine of up to $250,000.
