Herbert Wertheim pays $40 million for record-breaking Ferrari Luce 'Chassis 0' in charity auction

Herbert Wertheim purchased the first production chassis of the Ferrari Luce, a luxury electric vehicle, for $40 million during a charity auction at Monterey Car Week. The sale established a new record for the highest-priced new car ever sold at auction, surpassing the previous record held by a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé. The bespoke 'Chassis 0' features a unique Madreperla semi-gloss finish that shifts from green to violet, along with a Perla-colored Le Mans metallic leather interior. While the vehicle was initially met with skepticism from some fans and analysts who felt the design strayed from Ferrari's traditional aesthetic, the auction price of $40 million significantly exceeded the $1.1 million presale estimate. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Ferrari Foundation to support educational initiatives. The winning bidder will receive the vehicle in the first quarter of 2027 after it returns to Maranello, Italy, for final assembly. The publicly available Luce model is priced at approximately $640,000.
