The administration announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 1,328 illegal immigrants during a two-week operation titled "Operation Safe Community — Washington, D.C." between August 1 and August 14. The operation targeted offenders with criminal histories, including those convicted of murder, kidnapping, and sexual battery. Nearly 400 of the arrested individuals were already convicted or charged with crimes in the United States, including members of the MS-13, 18th Street Gang, and Tren de Aragua. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that the operation successfully removed dangerous illegal immigrants from communities that often have sanctuary policies. Mullin noted that while local politicians prioritize the needs of illegal immigrants, the administration will always put American citizens first. ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Acting Assistant Director Patricia Hyde emphasized that the operation made neighborhoods safer by identifying and removing those who do not want to be located. The administration announced that all detainees will remain in ICE custody pending removal from the U.S.
