Florida Executes Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. for 1996 Hog Trail Murder

Florida State Prison executed Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. by lethal injection on Thursday evening at 6:12 p.m. Conahan, 72, was convicted of the 1996 kidnapping and strangling of Richard Allen Montgomery. The victim's body was found in a wooded area of southwest Florida, where authorities discovered the remains of at least six other people over a three-year period. Conahan was arrested in 1996 after a man who claimed to be an attack survivor testified that Conahan had lured him to the woods to pose for nude bondage photos. While Conahan maintained his innocence throughout his trial and requested further DNA testing to prove his lack of responsibility, the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court denied his final appeals. Conahan is the 15th person executed in Florida this year. Under the administration of Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida has carried out 19 executions in 2025, setting a state record. The execution took place as rioters gathered outside the prison to protest the death penalty.
