MapQuest becomes most-downloaded navigation app in the US after refusing to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America
MapQuest has become the most-downloaded navigation app in the United States, surpassing Google Maps and Apple Maps. The app rose to the top of the navigation chart on the Apple App Store following the administration's executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America. While Google Maps quickly updated its platform to reflect the name change for US users, MapQuest maintained its original name. MapQuest general manager Doug Berger stated that the company chose to keep the name people are familiar with. The company also launched a tool allowing subscribers to create their own names for the lake. In contrast, Apple Maps continues to use the name Lake Ontario. Despite the administration's push to rename the lake, the change has received limited public approval. Polls show only 14% of Americans approve of the name change, while 57% of oppose the higher tariffs on Canadian goods that accompanied the trade spat. Democratic representatives Tim Kennedy, Joe Morelle, and Debbie Dingell introduced legislation to block the federal order to rename the lake.
