Former Zambian Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya Killed During Security Raid on Opposition Leader Brian Mundubile's Property
Authorities in Zambia have confirmed the death of Mutotwe Kafwaya, a former minister, who was killed during a security raid on a property linked to opposition leader Brian Mundubile. The raid occurred a day after the presidential election, where incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner of a second five-year term. During the security operation, law enforcement officers encountered gunfire and resistance from unknown individuals, resulting in the fatal wounding of Mutotwe Kafwaya. The Zambian government accused the opposition party, NRPUP, and its officials, including Brian Mundubile, of possessing high-grade military weapons and being involved in insurgency and militia activity. However, Brian Mundubile rejected these allegations as total fabrications, claiming the opposition officials were unarmed and were shot at by the security forces. While the opposition leader remains in hiding, the Human Rights Commission in Zambia and UN human rights chief Volker Turk have called for transparency and accountability regarding the arrests and the and the whereabouts of those detained during the security operations.
