A 26-year-old Russian-born driver deliberately rammed a car into a crowd in Caen, killing two people and injuring nine others.

A 26-year-old Russian-born driver deliberately rammed a car into a group of pedestrians in the northwestern French city of Caen on Wednesday night. The incident, which occurred near the train station, resulted in two deaths and approximately nine to ten injuries, with seven of those injured being in critical condition. Local officials, including Caen Mayor Aristide Olivier, stated that the incident appeared to be the result of a fight between two groups that turned bad, rather than a terrorist attack. The driver was arrested approximately 20 kilometers away in the port town of Ouistreham after being tracked by the city's CCTV network. Prefect David Clavière reported that the car drove into the crowd opposite the station. While the driver was not previously known to intelligence services, he had a history of minor traffic offenses. Detectives from Caen's Specialised Crime Division are now leading the investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the driver's actions.
