Pierre Michel Formosa, a 68-year-old French tourist, died in California's Death Valley National Park after his vehicle became stuck in mud. While traveling with a companion, Formosa was stranded in temperatures reaching 116 degrees Fahrenheit. The pair attempted to walk across the salt flats toward Badwater Road to find assistance, but Formosa was unable to continue after approximately 1.3 miles. His companion successfully reached the road and flagged down a passing driver, who alerted authorities to his plight. Park rangers and a California Highway Patrol helicopter launched a search and rescue operation, eventually locating Formosa's body about 1.5 miles from the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds issued a statement expressing condolences and warned the public about the park's extreme heat and remoteness. Officials recommend that visitors carry sufficient water, stay with their vehicle during breakdowns, and use satellite devices for communication in areas with limited cell service.
