Fabián Vázquez Románea Predicts 56 Cold Fronts for Mexico's 2026-2027 Season

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has forecast that 56 cold fronts will enter Mexico during the 2026-2027 season, which is six more than the historical average of 50 systems. The season is scheduled to begin in September 2026 and conclude in May 2027. Fabián Vázquez Románea, the Coordinator General of the SMN, stated that the season will be characterized by the warm phase of El Niño-Oscilación del Sur (ENOS). This ocean-atmospheric phenomenon is expected to reach its maximum intensity as a "very strong" event by the end of the year. The presence of El Niño will likely increase humidity and favor air masses moving toward the north and center of the country. Approximately 32 of the 56 predicted fronts will arrive between November and February, accounting for more than half of the total systems. Authorities have warned that these fronts may interact with tropical cyclones, potentially modifying their trajectories or intensifying their effects. Additionally, the SMN predicts an increase in the frequency of "North" events, which can generate strong winds, higher sea levels, and precipitation in coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico.
