Ursula von der Leyen Visits Greenland to Announce Major Funding Package and Strengthen Ties with Denmark

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in the capital of Greenland, Nuuk, to announce a substantial funding package for the autonomous territory. The administration announced that the EU will more than double its investment in Greenland for the next budget, targeting areas such as critical raw materials, clean energy, and infrastructure. Von der Leyen traveled to Nuuk with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to deepen the partnership between the European Union and the territory. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen joined them for a joint news conference. Nielsen noted that the EU has shown clear support for Greenland in the current geopolitical situation. This visit occurs as the United States, under President Trump, has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland for national security reasons. President Trump has suggested that the U.S. needs the island and has threatened to use military force to seize it. The EU's investment package aims to bolster Greenland's economic and infrastructure development while strengthening the political ties between the European Union, Denmark, and Greenland.
