UNICEF Releases Six Children and Seven Women Kidnapped by Haitian Gangs

UNICEF announced on Friday that six children and seven women were released by a Haitian gang following a deadly attack on the Kenscoff community near Port-au-Prince. The captives, which included three children under the age of two, were freed after a mass abduction involving more than 50 people. The release follows a brutal attack on August 23, where at least 47 people were allegedly killed by gang members and over 2,600 residents were displaced. UNICEF deputy representative Yannig Dussart stated that the release provides a rare moment of hope amid the ongoing violence. The attack highlighted the scale of gang influence in Haiti, where armed groups have seized control of much of the capital. In response, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the deployment of a new gang-suppression force. The administration's push to remove Haitians living and working legally in the U.S. and those who entered illegally have also contributed to the other country's displacement crisis, as nearly 1.5 million people are currently internally displaced in Haiti.
